Make a donation to support our research and help protect Swedish biodiversity.

Your support helps us continue using long-term airborne eDNA data to understand how ecosystems change across time and space, and to develop new approaches for biodiversity monitoring, conservation, and environmental preparedness.

Here’s how your generosity can support us:

Reference Genomes

Identifying species from environmental DNA relies on high-quality reference genomes.

Many organisms found in Swedish ecosystems still lack suitable reference data, limiting our ability to identify them with confidence.

By generating new reference genomes, we can improve species detection and expand our understanding of biodiversity across Sweden.

Sequencing a reference genome costs approximately 5,000–10,000 SEK, depending on the species

Salary

Research at SweBITS depends on dedicated scientists who analyse data, develop methods, and translate results into biodiversity insights.

Supporting salaries helps ensure continuity in long-term ecological monitoring, data analysis, and scientific discovery.

1 million SEK would support the salary of a researcher for approximately one year

DNA Sequencing

A major part of our work involves high-throughput DNA sequencing, which transforms environmental samples into millions of genetic reads used to reconstruct biodiversity across Sweden.

While the Kiruna and Ljungbyhed time series have been sequenced up to 2024, four additional monitoring stations remain entirely unexplored, representing a major opportunity to expand the dataset across both space and time. Moreover, sampling is still ongoing, with new air filters collected every week.

Continued sequencing is essential to unlocking the full scientific potential of this unique archive.

Extracting and sequencing a single air filter costs approximately 6,000 SEK
